A new pair of headphones is a wonderful way of making a big step up in listening quality for a relatively small amount money. The very best headphones make a newly-minted feel from your old favourite songs and can even bring an appreciation for tracks you never thought you liked. Yes, if you want to fall in love with music all over again, a new pair of headphones is the place to go.

But there are many types of headphone to choose from: in-ears, on-ears, over-ears, Bluetooth, noise-cancelling. If you want a pair for home use, to plug into your hi-fi system or portable music player, then a pair of over-ear headphones is best. You’ll then have to choose whether you want open-backs (which leak sound) or the more typical closed-backs (which don’t).

To use with your smartphone, you’ll have to decide whether you want the uber-portability of in-ear headphones or the less intrusive fit of on-ears – and both styles vary enormously in budget.

Buyers Guide

Your choice of headphones is as much about your lifestyle (and even personal brand) as it is about your wallet. Some people buy different types for different uses—one, say, for working out and another for relaxing. The lines, however, are blurring. You’ll now see people on the street or on the train wearing larger models that used to be reserved for home use, while others are attached to their earbuds 24/7, even while watching movies or TV.

 Sound Quality
Like speakers, headphones can emphasize different parts of the audio spectrum, and you might prefer one sound over another. If you can, try headphones before buying. If you buy online, check return policies to make sure that your purchase can be returned or exchanged for another model.

Dynamic/Moving Coil

Most headphones you come across use a dynamic driver.

Also known as moving coil headphone transducer, dynamic drivers use alternating magnetic fields to create sound by displacement of air. A dynamic driver is like a smaller version of the large drivers you usually see in home speakers.

A dynamic driver consists of three main parts that make up the driver, neodymium, or ferrite magnetic element, a voice coil and a diaphragm attached to the voice coil. To work, first, the magnet magnetizes the voice coil. When the voice coil receives current, it creates a magnetic field. Depending on the flow of the current, the voice coil is either attracted or repelled towards the magnetic field. This, in turn, causes the diaphragm attached to the voice coil to move to displace air and finally creating sound.

With a simple working operation and low cost of materials used, dynamic drivers do not require much power to function correctly and subsequently come with cheaper price tags. However, being so popular, dynamic drivers do come with their share of problems. One of the biggest complaints about these drivers is they are very likely to distort audio at high volume. Though this is true, with growing technology and good engineering, distortion in a dynamic driver is slowly being dealt with especially with high-end models.

Balanced Armature

Balanced armature (BA) drivers are smaller than dynamic drivers, and this makes only available in in-ear monitors (IEM). However, balanced armature driver are more expensive than the dynamic drivers.

Balanced armature drivers lack bass response because they do not displace air to produce sound. Because of this BA drivers come in combination with dynamic drivers to overcome this problem.

Balanced armature drivers were first developed for people with hearing aids. However, with improvements, BA drivers are mostly used by music producers for sound reproduction or when working out due to their lightweight and small nature.

Electrostatic headphones or speakers are not only different from the popular dynamic type headphones and speakers but also use advanced principles to operate.

Many factors affect the sound of a headphone, what sets apart electrostatic headphones is that the diaphragm, which produces sound, is evenly placed over its entire surface. The driver is also light, therefore has a fast transient response.

Electrostatic headphones are faster than any headphone type. They also possess clarity unobtainable by other headphone drivers.

The downside of electrostatic headphones is they are costly. They give out great sound, but the price tags that come with them are not affordable to most people.

Electrostatic headphones require more power to give out their full characteristics. Because of this, owning an amplifier or “energiser” will be a requirement for an electrostatic headphone owner.

Technology has advanced in the audio world, but as this happens most people including me still prefer a wired headphone over the wireless headphones.

Most people shopping for a new pair of headphone are torn between these two options, wired and wireless. Below am going to show you a few reasons why the wired headphones might still be the best choice for you.

For starters, let us look at the sound quality. For a long time, wired headphones have had the upper hand when they are compared to wireless headphones regarding the sound quality. While this might still be true, wireless headphones especially Bluetooth headphones have seen a considerable improvement in the quality of their audio. However, not all Bluetooth headphones have the same high sound quality, and you would have to get high-end wireless headphones to experience better sound. High-end wireless headphones are expensive, but if you are looking to spend less and still get better sound quality, wired headphones remain the best choice.

Wired headphones also have advantages with regards to compatibility and battery life. Armed with a 3.5mm headphone jack, a wired headphone user has less to worry about the headphone compatibility. When it comes to the battery life, apart from a few wired headphone models that come with a battery to power features such as noise-canceling, wired headphones are completely independent of batteries.

Best Headphones

You will be surprised not only by the clarity and vividness, but also by the sense of realism imbued in the sound produced by these headphones, something that hasn’t been experienced in headphones until now. The 50 mm diameter driver unit with titanium diaphragm is integrated with the front plate and has been machined from pure aluminum. The principal parts are composed of machined aluminum and stainless steel. It was necessary to create the housing from a rigid metal so as to achieve the sense of realism. This is a resolute prestige model, the zenith of the SONOROUS series.

Focal Utopia Open Back Over-Ear Headphones

The acoustic quality of this exclusive solution allowed Focal to avoid the use of any crossover or passive filtering process to achieve a frequency response from 5Hz to 50kHz! The equivalent of two tiny authentic loudspeakers over your ears. They meet all the requirements expected of high-end headphones due to their sophisticated and elegant design and to purposeful materiality, such as the carbon fibre yoke and true lambskin leather ear cushions. The listening experience is outstanding in terms of realism, natural sound reproduction, dynamics and clarity. When listening to them, the headphones virtually disappear and the audio signal is revealed with a level of precision never achieved until Utopia.
Design is also a key point, be it in regards to the way of using the headphones, comfort, as well as the aesthetic. Another achievement with Utopia is the removal from the conventional rotation included on the yoke and its integration into the headband to ensure a total purity of the design. The true lambskin leather, used on the cushions, reinforces the character of classically elegant lines, as well as the expression of comfort and overall performances. These headphones have immediately been applauded by the press as well as music lovers after launching.

  Pros   Cons
Its clarity is crisp.  Its quality is bad.
Amazing details and transparency to the sound.

D8000 Over-Ear Planar Magnetic Headphones

he D8000 have an amazingly detailed, balanced, and dynamic sound signature. There’s not much that’s laid back about them, as every bass drop and every high note is registered with emotive impact, but they never stray into being harsh or unpleasant. Combining the weight and the sound of these headphones, I always know I’m wearing them so there’s none of that magical disappearance of technology as I ease into simply enjoying the music. But that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the hell out of my music.

The bass extension of these headphones is scarcely believable. They use planar magnetic technology — such as you’d find on high-performing headphones from Audeze, MrSpeakers, and Hifiman — though Final has invented its own particular implementation that focuses on delivering more substantial bass than you’d usually get from planar headphones. I can’t say I’ve necessarily felt deprived of bass response with other planar magnetics, but the D8000 ratchet up both the quality and quantity to an unprecedented level. The low-frequency nuance that these headphones are capable of conveying is sensational. You need to hear them with an album like Ask the Dust by Lorn or Untrue by Burial, both of which explore bass-heavy electronic soundscapes with only fleeting shimmers of treble. The beauty of the D8000 is that they have this abundant resolution in the low frequencies without losing the sparkly high-frequency detail when it arises.

  Pros  Cons
Bass is extended, detailed, and impactful Too heavy for comfortable use
Vocals are engaging without ever being harsh or sibilant   To get the most out of them, you’ll need a good amplifier

  Pros   Cons
It has an incredible sound quality.  It is quite pricey.
It is able to pair to TV, Mac, iPhone and I pad.

HIFIMAN HE1000se  Headphone

The first thing you notice when listening to the HE1000se is the incredible sense of air and space it provides. It’s extremely transparent, given its open design, ultra-thin diaphragms and lightning quick speed. As planar magnetic headphones go, I think it’s one of the two or three most transparent I have heard, topped only by HiFiMAN’s own flagship Susvara and perhaps the Abyss Phi CC. It’s more transparent than the non-Phi version of the Abyss, LCD-4 and Ether 2, to my ears, if we’re talking about the top tier planars on the market.

The sound of the HE1000se is fairly neutral with timbre that stays pretty true to the original recording. There seems to be just a little coloration in the upper midrange, which I will talk about a little later. Overall, I felt that had very little impact on the sound. To my ears this version of the HE1000 excels with the same types of music as its predecessors: classical, electronic, pop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, reggae and pretty much any good quality recording.

The midbass is excellent as well, making this one of the best top-to-bottom bass performers I’ve heard. Resolution is crisp and the midbass never eats more space than it should. But at the same time, if you let it off the leash, it is absolutely vicious! Kick drums can punch with pretty savage impact in more aggressive metal and EDM tracks. Tonally, this iteration comes across as a little more neutral to me than some earlier versions of the HE1000, which sounded a tad warm.

  Pros   Cons
  It has superior performance.  nil
